History
The Pebsham curriculum is centred around three historical concepts:
-
Developing the theme of Significance
-
Developing the theme of Civilisation
-
Developing the theme of Invasion
These concepts are developed through a progressive teaching sequence of components of study which build historical knowledge of people, events, chronology and historical terms.
Alongside this core knowledge children learn about the big ideas and processes of history through enquiry, using evidence and communicating ideas.
Underpinning our historical enquiry are the key concepts of: continuity and change; cause and consequence; similarity and difference; significance and perspectives. These are developed through regular re-visiting in a range of historical contexts.
Our history teaching meets the aims of the national curriculum and ensures that all Pebsham children are able to:
-
gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world
-
develop a sense of chronology and the passing of time and an ability to place significant events and societies within it
-
understand that history is based on evidence and different kinds of historical sources and that there may be a different interpretation of those facts
-
ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement
-
begin to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and the relationship between different groups
-
draw comparisons and make connections between different time periods and their own lives.
